Jennifer Holliday is back on Broadway as Shug Avery in “The Color Purple,” and she is absolutely a dream to watch. The last time Holliday was on Broadway was as Matron Mama Morton in “Chicago.” She has such a mesmerizing presence on the stage and, of course, has that incomparable Jennifer Holliday voice.
When she comes onstage, everyone is just waiting for her to dazzle the audience, and they are not disappointed. Holliday is so touching every time she sings. Not only an incredibly gifted singer, she is also a gifted actress. And the chemistry between her and Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo is splendid to witness.
Sometimes listening to Holliday will make you smile; sometimes it will make you cry. She performs with such passion and intensity that she is captivating to watch, as is the entire cast of this amazing musical.
I’m so sorry to say that “The Color Purple” will only play through Jan. 8, 2017. It’s so disappointing to realize that this fantastic, uplifting production is going to end. You have to make plans to go see it! Holliday is joined on the stage by an outstanding cast that includes Danielle Brooks, Isaiah Johnson, Kyle Scatliffe and Jennie Harney, along with a huge cast of African-American supporting actors. The musical has a moving book by Marsha Norman and Brenda Russell and music and lyrics by Allee Willis and Stephan Bray. “The Color Purple” is playing at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on West 45th Street.
