Shoji was born and raised in Sendai, Japan. At a very early age, he began painting and drawing. He eventually moved to Tokyo, where he studied fine art. It wasn’t until Shoji moved to Los Angeles in the 1970s that he discovered his passion for design.
With a degree in fashion design, he began working with a prominent clothing manufacturer to gain experience. During the same time, he began to notice that women had few choices when it came to special occasion dresses in the contemporary market. So he launched his label in 1982. Today, Shoji’s collection is globally recognized. His looks are devoted to women ranging from busy working mothers to glamorous celebrities.
