It’s a new year, and time for a new you, especially if you have been waiting for the right time to get fit. At the Harlem YMCA, Phyllis Spencer Lennon is offering several ways to get your mind, body and spirit healthy. We met up with her the other day, and she talked about getting fit this year.

For home workouts, she suggested the following: “Simply get up and move. March in place, and when you are sitting, step in place. Stand up straight. Walk or sit with good posture. Try to diet two or four times a week. Don’t deprive yourself. Just eat in moderation.

“Before you start any fitness program, make sure you see a doctor,” she continued. “I used to be a tomboy until my mom, Mrs. Rose Spencer, enrolled me in classes at the Harlem YMCA that included gymnastics and dancing.”

Today, Lennon is a police officer with the NYPD. When off-duty, Lennon teaches fitness at the Harlem YMCA. As a freelance fashion model, she walked the runway for designers such as Brenda Brunson-Bey, Princess Jenkins of the Brownstone, Hats by Harriet Rosebud, Simply Greta, Imani Jewelry, Hats by Bunn and the late Rowena H. Mays. She has also worked with Semirah Jewel, a talented designer known for her wrap skirts, dresses and jewelry. Recently, Lennon appeared as a guest on the show “Model Living.”

Fitness is very important and keeping your body fit and healthy will allow you to feel better about yourself. Keeping your body toned also increases your mental health. Lennon’s Harlem YMCA programs include group fitness classes, where she urges you to bring a friend, step aerobics and Insanity classes. For men and women, from beginners to advanced, she offers classes at every fitness level and works with everyone at his or her own pace. There are also pool classes available.

The Harlem Y is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, call 917-403-8799 or visit the Harlem YMCA on West 135th Street.
