Nine mothers and a father whose sons were killed by gun violence in Jersey City recently came together at a community rally to recount the details of how their sons were murdered and what they have done and what they plan to do about it.
The gathering took place Monday at St. John’s Baptist Church and was hosted by the Rev. Dr. Herbert Daughtry of Brooklyn’s House of the Lord Church. Hessie Williams, whose son, Leander Nunie Williams, was killed Aug. 9, 2016, organized the group of mothers.
“My son was only 17,” she said. “He was my baby. I think about him all of the time, but I am determined to do all that I can so that other mothers won’t have to feel the pain that I feel.”
Daughtry has been acting as the spiritual counselor and representative for, group. He, along with Yusef Chavers, has been assisting the mothers in their organizing effort.
“Being with these mothers and other mothers of slain children across the country always causes me deep sorrow and greatest admiration for their courage,” Daughtry said, “and motivates me to provide comfort and my organizing experience to help them achieve their objective.”
