Organized by the Malcolm X Commemoration Committee and the Sons of Afrika (firstname.lastname@example.org), the annual visit to Malcolm X’s gravesite in Hartsdale, N.Y., will occur Friday, May 19. Every year since the assassination of Malcolm Shabazz, Pan-Africans meet to show respect to him and the gravesite he now shares with Dr. Betty Shabazz. The ceremony was established by Malcolm X’s sister, Ella Little-Collins.
In celebration of Malcolm X’s 92nd birthday, Amarachi Restaurant will be screening “Malcolm’s Echo: The Legacy of Malcolm X,” a film that was directed by British-Nigerian filmmaker Dami Akinnusi-Rock.
The busy, Brooklyn-based mom of two is a recent winner of the African Movie Academy Award for Best Documentary. After the screening, there will be a panel discussion of filmmakers, guest speakers and entrepreneurs. There will also be a poetry performance by Abiodun of The Last Poets. The door opens at 5 p.m. for dinner and drinks, and the film screening is free at 7 p.m.
Amarachi Restaurant is located at 189 Bridge St. in Brooklyn.
