One-hundred percent of the graduates from Uncommon Collegiate Charter High School (832 Marcy Ave.), in Bedford-Stuyvesant are set to go to college in the fall, including the first ever graduate headed to an Ivy League school. To celebrate, Thursday, May 18, 2017, the school held a fanfare-filled pep rally, where students announced what colleges they are attending, similar to a NCAA Division 1 signing day celebration. Forty-eight graduating seniors, their parents, teachers and hundreds of underclassmen and middle schoolers were in attendance. “This unique, inspirational pep rally celebrates the accomplishment of Uncommon Collegiate graduates,” said a statement released on behalf of the school, “nearly all of whom are Black or Hispanic and low income.”

The statement continued, “Of the graduating class, 60 percent are the first in their family to attend college. The graduates, many of whom have overcome daunting challenges, [walked] across the stage to their favorite song, [stood] up in front of hundreds of their peers and [declared] what college they are attending in the fall. The raucous rally is the most anticipated event of the school year and serves to inspire younger students to work hard toward their goals of getting to and through college.”
