Holiday cheer was in the air Dec. 7 as the Harlem Christmas tree was lit at the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building Plaza. Children and families were treated to hot chocolate from Starbucks, a visit from Santa Claus and train rides around the plaza. Attendees also made holiday centerpieces with officials from the Christmas Tree Farmers Association of New York who brought pieces of pine trees and other craft items. On the plaza, 107.5 FM WBLS radio personality Fred Buggs emceed a program of holiday music performed by the Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts and gospel singer Petula Beckles. The Rev. Karim Camara, who serves as Executive Director and Deputy Commissioner of the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based Community Development Services, got help from local children to flip the switch on the tree.
