This globally recognized date marks the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organization of African Unity, May 25, 1963. Representatives of 30 African nations gathered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, hosted by Emperor Haile Selassie, to establish the recognition and development of African liberation and unity. It is now celebrated around the world.

“On this 55th anniversary, Sistas’ Place honored our revolutionary freedom fighter Winnie Mandela with liberation education, a powerful video with Winnie Mandela, the history of African Liberation Day, music and an open discussion,” said Omowale Clay. “Sistas Place is where, whether it is our political community meeting, social events or our always sold-out Saturday night jazz shows, we always show how culture is a weapon!”

Tuesday, May 29, from noon to 7 p.m., Sistas’ Place (456 Nostrand Ave.) joined the national call to support Black Coffee shops. The local Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn community popped in as they always do to partake in the wide variety of international coffees, tea and pastries, music and conversation.
