Juneteenth celebration (39697)

The Juneteenth Committee of Masjid Malcolm Shabazz and The Martin Luther King Jr. Center New York Support Group is hosting the annual Juneteenth/KingFest Celebration Parade and Street Fair Saturday, June 16, in Harlem starting at 11 a.m.

Festivities will start at 116th Street between Lenox and Fifth avenues.

The Juneteenth holiday is Tuesday, June 19, and commemorates the day in 1865 when slaves in Texas learned they were free. Slavery in the states in rebellion against the United States had been outlawed two and a half years earlier by the Emancipation Proclamation, but the proclamation had no real effect until the end of the Civil War in 1865.
