Bronx City Council Member Andy King flew to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands this week to assist in efforts to rebuild areas that were destroyed by Hurricanes Irma and Maria last year.

Some 35 volunteers from New York, including elected officials, union leaders and local residents, will team up with government and not-for-profit organizations in St. Thomas to aid in humanitarian efforts on the island, King said, before boarding a flight to St. Thomas.

Upon the arrival of the New York delegation, they are expected to meet with the USVI Senate. They will also tour the hospital and the schools that were damaged.

Last year, King led relief efforts for the Virgin Islands out of his East Gun Hill Road and Co-op City offices and with various nonprofit groups across the 12th Council District, including Riverbay in Co-op City. In October, volunteers in Co-op City loaded a 40-foot container with more than 20 palettes of supplies, including water, food, generators, baby supplies, batteries and first-aid materials.
