Laborers Local 924 endorsed Xamayla Rose for the upcoming May 14 special election race for New York City Council District 45.
Local 924 is a part of DC 37, New York City’s largest public employee union.
“We believe that Xamayla Rose will work tirelessly on the behalf of working people. Working people need strong advocates in City Hall because we count on members in the City Council to stand up and fight for our rights,” said Local 924 President Kyle Simmons in a statement. “We’re proud to support Rose’s campaign for City Council District 45 and believe she will do the work to ensure all workers will be treated with dignity, justice, and respect.”
Local 924 represents laborers who work mostly at the CUNY Senior and Community Colleges, Office of the Comptroller, Police Department, Fire Department, Administration for Children’s Services, Department of Social Services, Department of Buildings, Department of Health, Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Sanitation, Department of Transportation, Department of Citywide Administrative Services, Board of Education and the Health & Hospitals Corporation.
Rose said she was happy to have the union’s support.
“I am so proud to have Laborers Local 924’s endorsement,” said Rose in a statement. “My father was a construction worker and I will always support the policies that benefit the men and women of labor. When we stand together and create policy to empower those who work the hardest to build our city, we’ll see a fairer, more equitable New York City. I’m proud to have their support.”
New York City Council District 45 represents Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood, Canarsie, Flatlands and Marine Park. May 14’s special election is the result of New York City Council Member Jumaane Williams being elected to public advocate, leaving a vacancy in the district. Rose has worked as a community organizer for The Christopher Rose Community Empowerment Campaign (a nonprofit) and was an active member of Community Board 17.
