The Girls on the Run program culminated with a celebratory 5k fun run Thursday, June 13. More than 730 girls in the program were joined by running buddies and “Sparkle Runners” who provide support and encouragement along the 3.1 mile course. Pre-5k activities began at 4:30 p.m. and the run/walk started at 6 p.m. The event took place at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island.

Girls on the Run NYC is a nonprofit organization that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. The 10-week program reaches nearly 800 local 3rd through 8th graders from all five boroughs each season, and teaches young girls life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games, and builds confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

“The Girls on the Run program is designed specifically to improve girls’ social, psychological and physical skills,” said Allison Hauser, executive director, Girls on the Run NYC. “We see the changes that take place each season and joyfully watch as our participants become more confident and even more inspired to pursue their dreams.”

Based in Charlotte, N.C., Girls on the Run is a nonprofit organization with local councils in all 50 states.
