On Monday, if the White House’s incompetent incumbent couldn’t possibly go any further as a racist demagogue, he stepped closer to the precipice of madness and inanity. Trump was practically foaming at the mouth during an afternoon press conference, continuing his attack on the four women of color in Congress, shouting that they should “go back” where they came from.
His intemperate comments were aimed at the Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, the only foreign born woman among the congresswomen.
Trump fumed that the women hate America, stating, “They can leave. And you know what? I’m sure there will be many people that won’t trust them. But they have to love our country.” His vituperative remarks specifically targeted Rep. Omar, a native of Somalia, suggesting she “hates Jews,” and he falsely accused her of supporting Al Qaeda.
In the wake of the attacks, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has had her own differences with the so-called “Squad” of insurgents, announced that a resolution is being drafted to condemn Trump for his racist tweets and comments. Trump, she said, “went beyond his own low standards using disgraceful language.” In her note to fellow Democrats, she said, “Let me be clear, our caucus will continue to forcefully respond to these disgusting attacks.”
The resolution is being drafted by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md) and freshman Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-NJ), who was born in Poland. The House passed the resolution with overwhelming Democratic support 240-187 on Tuesday, July 16. The resolution will not deter Trump’s mean-spirited assaults; in fact, it will probably fuel more outrageous demeaning attacks, as he does all he can to provoke the opposition while he appeals to his base.
Omar said it very well in a tweet: Trump and his allies “are working to silence the voices of the people who see themselves represented in me. I will stay in the ring, fighting for what is right and will never back down in the face of these attacks.”
