Once again the nation’s Dreamers are confronted with a nightmare.

This week the Supreme Court heard arguments over the future of Deferred Action for Childhood

Arrivals, or DACA.

Since 2012, under President Obama, DACA has protected children who were brought to this country from deportation. This, as is widely known, was not a pathway to citizenship but a temporary measure to halt deportation.

But Dreamers were allowed work permits in some states, including California, as well as access to in-state tuition and driver’s licenses. This status was renewable every two years.

In 2017, after conservative state attorneys general threatened to sue, Trump took steps to end the program.

Now the situation, which has been in limbo in lower courts, is before the Supreme Court, and the conservative majority seems ready to allow Trump to have his way. A decision may arrive by summer.

In effect, Trump has moved to change a law by breaking it, and that’s not how the democratic process operates, though as we continuously learn he is no respecter of the rule of law.

Interestingly, if the court decides in his favor that could be a disastrous outcome for Trump during the 2020 elections, but it would also be deeply detrimental to thousands of Dreamers.

Trump can’t have it both ways, and it’s good to see him in a box much like the current impeachment against him.

This dilemma would not exist if Trump had let what Obama had rendered alone. But nothing irritates him as much as the laws left behind by Obama, and DACA is one that has flustered him since he took up occupancy of the Oval Office.

Our aim remains one of getting him evicted. A decisive step in that direction is underway and that’s a dream we are sure we share with the Dreamers.
