Aha! Dear readers: We have found a collection of Republicans we salute and almost totally agree with, particularly when it comes to removing Trump from the Oval Office.
Led by attorney George T. Conway III—yes, Kellyanne’s spouse, an unwavering surrogate for Trump—the group labelling itself the Lincoln Project announced on Tuesday its rejection of Trump and everything he stands for.
“The 2020 general election,” they announced, “by every indication, will be about persuasion, with turnout expected to be at record highs. Our efforts are aimed at persuading enough disaffected conservatives, Republicans and Republican-leaning independents in swing states and districts to help ensure a victory in the Electoral College, and congressional majorities that don’t enable or abet Mr. Trump’s violations of the Constitution, even if that means Democratic control of the Senate and an expanded Democratic majority in the House.”
Emphasizing their connection to the “Rail Splitter” who freed a number of slaves in order to save the union, they said, “We look to Lincoln as our guide and inspiration. He understood the necessity of not just saving the Union, but also of knitting the nation back together spiritually as well as politically. But those wounds can be bound up only once the threat has been defeated. So, too, will our country have to knit itself back together after the scourge of Trumpism has been overcome.”
And we certainly appreciate the nice nod to Dr. King when they noted, “Mr. Trump and his fellow travelers daily undermine the proposition we as a people have a responsibility and an obligation to continually bend the arc of history toward justice. They mock our belief in America as something more meaningful than lines on a map.”
A key word in the group’s announcement is “persuasion.” If we could only get a few of the folks in the Senate to express such sentiments, the Lincoln Project and we would be free of an ogre with little regard for them or us.

The timing couldn’t be better as the impeachment process speeds ahead with an expected vote of impeachment from the House. And Trump is sure to add them to his hit list, and to the disparaging letter to Nancy Pelosi about what he terms a “partisan impeachment crusade.”
To be sure, we are only talking about a few disgruntled Republicans, who candidly admit they remain tied to the party, but it’s the kind of news that may reach a few others straddling the fence and waiting to see which way the wind blows.
For us the wind is blowing toward impeachment, blowing toward the 2020 election, and as we see it, inevitably toward a resounding chorus from the people that to Make America Great Again—Trump Must Go!
