Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced new state-wide restrictions on bars, restaurants, gyms and private gatherings. Starting Friday, no more than ten people can gather for a private event and bars, restaurants and gyms must close at 10pm.

The swift turn of events comes on the heels of a spiking COVID-19 infection rate of 2.9% in New York State.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy imposed similar restrictions recently. Gov. Cuomo said the new restrictions are in alignment with neighboring states.

“The states around us have done this. We’re going to do it also,” said Gov. Cuomo in a radio interview.

Gov. Cuomo hopes these new restrictions will dampen record breaking nation-wide COVID-19 infection rates. With new daily cases surpassing 140,000 in the United States, the possibility of another lockdown in New York could become a reality.

The restrictions in New York start Friday and an end was not announced.
