Parents from the NYC Coalition for Educational Justice (CEJ) and students are calling out the lack of funding for Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education (CRSE) in the Department of Education.

Advocates say Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Executive Budget puts no money in the education budget for culturally responsive education despite promises to do so. CRSE does not appear in the budget and parents say the City Council isn’t fighting for it.

Last week, parents of CEJ along with public school students delivered gifts to Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter including books about Malcolm X, an owl to represent wisdom from knowledge gained from books on Black history and an hourglass to represent the time children don’t have to waste.
