A group of Bronx public charter schools released an open letter to the community about the continued dangers of COVID-19 and the importance of being vaccinated.
Recent reports have shown that the Delta variant, now the dominant COVID strain in the U.S., is highly transmissible and more resistant even to those who have gotten their shots, and medical experts have sounded the alarm about the need for more and more people to be vaccinated.
The Bronx trails among the five boroughs in immunization rates, with only 43% of vaccinated adults compared to Manhattan’s 64%. Bronx public charter schools are continuing this effort to ensure an uninterrupted fall semester for students of all ages.
The new variant makes the weeks and months ahead the most critical time for children who aren’t eligible to be vaccinated. Students across the Bronx, in all types of schools, have faced obstacles since last March, when the virus first appeared in the five boroughs.
