Have you ever taken a bite of a piece of fruit freshly plucked from a tree? If not, a freshly picked piece of fruit is vibrant and juicy. Imagine the most delicious piece of candy you ever tasted—it is better than that.
As city dwellers we have few opportunities to pick our own fruit. While we have an abundance of community gardens throughout East Harlem, only some of them have actual fruit bearing trees. Thanks to a collaboration between Vitafusion Fruit Tree Project and Concrete Safaris, East Harlem will have 35 new apple, plum, and pear trees as well as blueberry and blackberry bushes.
Through community engagement Concrete Safaris has reinforced the concept of healthy living for our youth and community members. For over a decade they have serviced East Harlem by hosting “get active” outdoor garden and street-based events. Vitafusion Fruit Tree project has planted more than 200,000 trees around the globe!
Join me, as I join them this Friday, Oct. 8 at 10:30 a.m. outside of the Jefferson Houses Management office at 300 East 115th street to take part in this planting event. Proof of COVID vaccination or a negative COVID test taken within the prior 72 hours and masks are required. The event is happening rain or shine!
