I was curious as to what is celebrated in the month of April. Most people know February is Black History Month, March is Women’s History Month, and June is the month when we celebrate LGBTQ Pride. I decided to do a little research about what is celebrated in April and boy oh boy there is quite a bit to celebrate.
Did you know just some of the causes and interests celebrated in April include everything from: African American Women’s Fitness Month, Alcohol Awareness Month, Black Women’s History Month, Financial Literacy Month, Month of the Military Child, National Arab American Heritage Month, National Autism Awareness Month, National Cancer Control Month, National Child Abuse Awareness Month, National Donate Life Awareness Month, National Fair Housing Month, National Minority Health Month, National Month of Hope, National Parkinson’s Awareness Month, National Poetry Month, National Volunteer Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Sexually Transmitted Infections Awareness Month, and Stress Awareness Month…to name just a few.
There are even some obscure observances in the month of April that should not be overlooked. They range from: Fresh Florida Tomato Month, Irritable Bowel Syndrome Awareness Month, Keep America Beautiful Month, Lawn and Garden Month, Mathematics Awareness Month, National Canine Fitness Month, National Cannabis Awareness Month, National Car Care Month, National Fresh Celery Month, National Humor Month, National Internship Awareness Month, National Pecan Month, National Safe Digging Month, National Soft Pretzel Month, National Straw Hat Month, National Welding Month, and Pets are Wonderful Month.
This isn’t even a full list, but if you are looking for something to celebrate in the month of April, you’ve got plenty to keep you busy. It is so important for us to stay connected to others and continue to build community, especially after the past two years. As we are consistently encouraged to “move beyond COVID” we must remember that the past two years have been exhausting and draining for many. So many people do not feel like their full selves and are looking for something, anything, to help them feel like they are a part of something larger than themselves. Hopefully these causes, serious and fun, will help you get started.
I, for one, did not know April was Black Women’s History Month. I usually just combine February and March and make my own Black Women’s celebrations during Black History and Women’s History Months. I am glad to know I can now extend my celebration and appreciation of Black women officially into the month of April.
I also plan to celebrate National Minority Health Month and encourage all my friends and family to schedule their annual check-ups and mammograms. And just for fun, I do plan on eating my fair share of soft pretzels and treating myself to a new straw hat for summer! I may even write a poem or two. What do you plan on celebrating?
