On Wednesday, anti-poverty organization Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-GNY) and Shipt will host a joint, community-wide event engaging the public to help fulfill its goal of supplying 500 backpacks filled with school supplies to New York City children experiencing homelessness in advance of the new school year.
The event coincides with the 20th anniversary of VOA-GNY’s Operation Backpack® campaign—a community service campaign with the goal of ensuring that every child living in a New York City homeless shelter has the grade-specific school supplies they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
Currently, there are approximately 15,000 children who rely on a NYC shelter as their temporary home. Helping children succeed in school is critical to breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty and having a full complement of school supplies plays a critical role in higher rates of homework completion, class participation and, ultimately, graduation.
In addition to filling backpacks, the event will offer various on-site activities and opportunities—including kid-friendly activities and games to enjoy as well as light food and refreshments.
