Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson hosted an interfaith prayer vigil on the steps of Borough Hall to honor the life of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols.
“I pray that we remember the way Tyre Nichols lived and not the violent way he was taken from his family and friends,” said Gibson. “Our Black men deserve better, and this is our opportunity as a community to come together to pray for healing and peace.”
Nichols, a Black man, was beaten earlier this month by Memphis, Tenn. police officers and later died. Five Black officers involved in the beating have been fired. Two other officers have been suspended, and two fire department emergency medical workers and a fire department lieutenant have been fired. Nichols funeral was held Wednesday.
