What does one say when a world-renowned icon, who was one of your biggest supporters and a dear friend, goes on to heaven to be with the Lord? My friend, Reverend Jesse Jackson, left this earth in the wee hours of February 17 at the age of 84 at his home in Chicago, surrounded by his family after a long illness. I first met him in 1984 when he ran for president for the first time. I even got to know his beautiful mother, Helen Burns, well while he was campaigning. What impressed me most was his love for people. He would make time for everyone, listening to their every word. The things he did for me were unbelievable. Once I was on Court TV defending Michael Jackson. The show’s host talked down to me and was very insulting. A fellow gossip columnist yelled at me, “Flo, shut the F— up,” all on air. Rev called Court TV, and the next week came on the show with me, accompanied by Bill Russell’s Harvard lawyer daughter Karen Kenyatta Russell, who was on satellite to back me up. Then, when Michael died, Rev’s daughter Santita called me and said, “Dad wanted to know if you need us to come to New York to bring you to LA. Your voice was breaking on TV.” I told her no, I could make it. Because of Rev, no matter how hard people try to knock me down every day, I will always know that I am somebody and keep hope alive. Rest well, my friend…….
