The legacy of Charlie Kirk has arrived in my mailbox.
Perhaps you, too, are one of the Americans who have received notifications from Turning Point Action, the right-wing organization he co-founded. One of the projects he was working on before he was assassinated last year was the Unrig the Census Emergency Petition, which aimed to allegedly show the nation — and particularly politicians — how many Americans “stand with President Trump in demanding a new, accurate census.”
If you didn’t get one of the letters, then you may have heard about the organization’s “All-American Halftime Show,” to counter Bad Bunny’s performance at Super Bowl LX. Basically, the organization is nothing more than an echo of Trump’s complaints about the 2020 presidential election, the results of which he still refuses to accept. Rather than put the defeat behind him and move on, he’s determined to rewrite the outcome, much like his other intentions about American history.
Regarding the census, to be sure, there were demographic disparities in the enumeration of Black Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans, but not to the extent that it would have significantly changed the outcome of the population count.
There were also groups, such as Non-Hispanic whites, who were overcounted. While there’s an unlikely redo on the last census, the Bureau has announced a major planning test later this year. None of this will impact Trump’s claims, and we can anticipate a citizenship question in the next census.
If my mailbox is indicative of the Turning Point’s offensive, look out for a deluge of propaganda, and I hope we are saving you the time and effort of trying to comprehend the mish-mash of garbage. We know exactly what needs unrigging.
