Central Park’s SummerStage, presented by the Capital One City Parks Foundation, is celebrating 40 years since the series debuted in June 1986. The monumental performance by avant-garde pioneer Sun Ra and in his Arkestra would set the precedent for the landmark series that has become a New York City institution, and has featured performances by Herbie Hancock, Femi Kuti, Morgan Freeman, and so many more.

“We can’t wait to share what’s in store for our 40th SummerStage anniversary season,” said Erika Elliot, executive artistic director, in a press release. “We’ve been working hard to curate a lineup that features iconic artists and longtime friends of the festival as well as fresh, new voices that make our festival as diverse and vibrant as the communities we serve. We’re so excited for a summer-long celebration of the past 40 years with New Yorkers across all five boroughs.” To commemorate the milestone anniversary, SummerStage has launched an interactive timeline detailing key moments in the series’ history and a photo hub where fans can upload their favorite SummerStage memories for a chance to be featured in content throughout the season. A special photo exhibition, “40 in Focus: SummerStage through the Lens of Photographer Jack Vartoogian,” will be on view at the Arsenal Gallery from June 12–August 21, with a special opening reception on June 16. The organization promises “special performances by legacy artists who have graced our stages throughout the years, marquee talent returning to their hometown boroughs, genre-defying collaborations, and breakout stars from across the globe,” as well as giveaways and more exciting announcements. “SummerStage was created to reflect the extraordinary diversity of New York City and its people. This year, as we celebrate 40 years, the festival continues to showcase the sounds of the city, from the streets and clubs to the parks,” said SummerStage founder Joe Killian in the press release.
