Over the last few years, social isolation has become a growing health concern. According to a 2025 report from the World Health Organization, 1 in 6 people worldwide are affected by loneliness. So the planners of one upcoming event intend to change that.
New Yorkers can come together in fellowship at the inaugural Community Week NYC Celebration. The new citywide initiative running from May 9-17 is aimed at combating social isolation by bringing folks from across the five boroughs to connect socially and professionally.
Jesse B. Rauch, co-founder of Community Week, hopes these events can uplift underrepresented organizations in the city. Rauch also believes that these events can help support the city’s social infrastructure.
“Behind every gathering that makes this city feel more human, there are people building connections with far too little support,” said Rauch. “Community Week NYC is about elevating those builders and making visible work that has long been under-recognized, under-supported, and increasingly essential. If we want a more resilient New York, this is the kind of social infrastructure cities can no longer afford to overlook.”
During the nine-day period, there will be in person events, gatherings, and activities, all with the intent of helping New Yorkers find connection and find their people. Organizers can also reach new audiences, increase visibility, be featured as part of a citywide cultural moment, and join a broader network of communities which are shaping the community.
Community Week NYC is presented by Sugary NYC and week nights [note for copy desk: spelling is CQ], two local groups dedicated to connecting people in meaningful ways. The events are one step in fighting social isolation and organizers say it can introduce people to the importance of the “third space” and ”community economy”
Community economy is the belief that when people gather in real life, neighborhoods and small businesses grow stronger. A healthy community economy also means civic life can become more resilient. Most importantly, a strong community economy also combats social isolation. “One of New York City’s greatest strengths is the sheer range of communities and experiences it holds,” said Gary Su, cultural curator behind Sugary. “Community Week NYC creates a way to rediscover the city through people’s natural interests and the communities that are already actively shaping its culture, energy, and sense of possibility.”
The first day of Community Week NYC includes the Healthwork and Somatic Healing Session, hosted by the Women Abroad Club. There is also a “Find Your People” night, an evening of DJ sets, comedy, and an opportunity to meet some of the organizations that are participating at other community week events.
Other days include events where people can bond over board games, yoga, coffee, listening sessions, book discussions, and various activities all with the intention of bringing people together.
Many of the community gatherings and networking events will be free, however larger events, workshops, and special experiences may have a ticketed price. For those who are not able to attend in person events, some panels and discussions will be livestreamed.
