The Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) hosted their 4th Annual Divine Nine & HBCU Night to a soldout crowd at New York City Center on Saturday, April 18.
Each year during this annual event, the DTH spotlights a distinguished academic institution from the list of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This year, Spelman College was honored as the featured institution. Alumni in attendance also represented a range of esteemed HBCUs, including Hampton University, Bethune Cookman College, and Morgan State University.

DTH transformed the timeless, legendary tale of the “Firebird,” rooted in Russian folklore and centered on love’s victory over evil, in a lush Caribbean landscape. John Taras’s dynamic choreography unfolded alongside Igor Stravinsky’s powerful score. The DTH signature classic was brought to life by the late Geoffrey Holder’s bold, vividly imagined sets and costumes.
This edition provides a photo flashback highlighting DTH’s 2026 event, Divine Nine organizations, and HBCUs.
