The Trump administration calls it the Department of Justice (DOJ), but for many Americans, it’s the Department of Injustice, particularly as it systemically reverses the acts and laws authored by the Obama and Biden administrations.
Three recent examples of these changes occurred when the DOJ filed a lawsuit against the District of Columbia bar seeking to discipline Trump lawyers, including those who defended Jeffrey Clark, who sought to undo the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche accused the D.C. bar of being a “blatantly partisan arm of leftist causes.” A similar flip by right-wing advocates is the announcement that the DOJ is planning to drop the charges against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani. The department indicted him during the Biden administration in what prosecutors called “an elaborate bribery scheme involving corruption and fraud at the expense of U.S. investors.” Once Adani employed one of Trump’s personal lawyers, it was only a matter of time before the move to drop all the charges against him was underway.
The third strike by the DOJ occurred when the department accused the Yale School of Medicine of violating anti-discrimination laws, after similar charges against the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The basic complaint cited by the DOJ centers on admission policies they said favored Black and Hispanic students over more qualified whites and Asian students. Then, as if this wasn’t enough salt in the wound, the agency has announced a $1.78 billion fund to compensate Trump supporters who say they were wrongly investigated and persecuted by previous administrations, mainly those of Obama and Biden.
You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand the aim and process of these measures. It’s no more than a continuation of the Trump administration to complete the total evisceration of anything that smacks of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and cutting such a broad swath that leaves little untouched.
As the midterm elections loom closer and closer, we advise you to pick up that ballot weapon and use it to stop the onslaught against what remains of the democratic process. As we go to press for this issue of the Amsterdam News, those valuable liberties and assets are diminishing by the moment.
