Americans are trapped in a quagmire of lies by a president with nothing but conspiracy in his narrow mind, a government devoid of checks and balances, and a populace awaiting the outcome of midterm elections in November.
What’s to be done is an existential question. We can hope there will soon come a time when the president’s prevarications no longer have a bearing on the nation’s politics, economy, or cultural affairs. The price of gas, groceries, rent, and healthcare are consequential things in terrible need of remedy.
If the midterms provide us a glimmer of hope that Congress can be flipped, we get temporary relief to go along with the recent courage of a few judges blocking some of the current nefarious decisions by an administration with little regard for human decency.
If all else fails, we may need “We the People” to be the clarion call — the boots on the ground to renew the “No Kings” rallies and revive some of the means of protest so successful in the past. Nothing is more disturbing than to witness the indifference of a president who beams at the World Cup while our soldiers are being killed and wounded in a war that he promised would never occur under his leadership.
That is to say nothing of a Secretary of Defense with the audacity to ask Congress for $87 billion to continue the “forever” war with Iran. Those billions are vitally needed to shore up the nation’s crumbling infrastructure now menaced by global warming, wildfires, and research and treatment on the rise of unsuspected epidemics.
Donald Trump’s lies, a spineless administration, and too many complacent people are not what hardworking, decent Americans deserve, and not what we should tolerate.
