In recognition of a celebratory career in jazz that began in the 1940s, Jazzmobile will honor jazz master Jimmy Heath on Friday, April 19, at 8 p.m. as part of the Symphony Space’s Harlem Resonance Festival (2537 Broadway at West 95th Street). The evening, which will feature standards and Heath’s original compositions, promises to have the audience swinging all through this anxiously awaited performance by the Jimmy Heath Big Band!
Just one of the program’s highlights will include a presentation of Jazzmobile’s “Jazzy Award” to Heath. Previous award recipients include Dr. Billy Taylor, Jazzmobile’s founding board director; journalist Evelyn Cunningham; jazz pianist, impresario and philanthropist George Wein; and the JPMorgan Chase Foundation for its longtime support and commitment to community arts. Jazzmobile thanks the lead supporter of the “Jazzy Award,” the City College of New York.
The Harlem Resonance Festival is a celebration of the vibrant, diverse and culturally rich area in Manhattan called Harlem, home to Jazzmobile for nearly 50 years. The Jimmy Heath Big Band concert, in affiliation with Jazzmobile and Symphony Space, will also perform in the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre.
