So far this year, more than 50,000 unaccompanied alien children have crossed our southern border. Children from multiple Central American countries, including El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, are traveling thousands of miles through deserts and rivers to reach America.
A large portion of these children have been brought to the country by “coyotes,” or human traffickers, who gain large profits by doing so. These coyotes often subject them to abuse, rape and other indignities, essentially a modern form of slavery.
Human trafficking of this kind has been occurring on our borders for years. In October 2002, 11 illegal immigrants were found dead in a car, trapped inside for at least four months. Although not all “coyotes” are this cruel, this incident demonstrates just how dangerous they can be.
Other unaccompanied children attempt to reach America not through “coyotes” but on their own by train or through the Rio Grande River. This method of transportation is also dangerous, as many have fallen to their death while others have drowned.
Despite the dangers, thousands of illegal immigrants continue to flood our border. With this unprecedented influx of unaccompanied children, it is becoming harder and harder for President Barack Obama to defend his liberal immigration policy.
Before 2012, when the president first announced his Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy, an average of 8,000 unaccompanied children entered U.S. custody every year. In 2012, more than 13,000 children came to our border. In 2013, more than 24,000 came. This year, a projected 60,000 to 90,000 children will come.
Although the president’s policy does not apply to those currently arriving, the president clearly did not send the right message to foreign nations, as the number of unaccompanied children has skyrocketed in the past of couple years since his announcement.
According to an internal Homeland Security memo analyzing the recent crisis at the border, “The main reason the subjects chose this particular time to migrate to the United States was to take advantage of the ‘new’ U.S. ‘law’ that grants a ‘free pass’ or permit.”
The president, deliberately or unintentionally, has incentivized families to send their children illegally to the U.S. by not responding with the appropriate consequences for breaking the law. He has circumvented the authority of Congress and enforced an immigration policy of his own choosing.
Under Obama’s leadership, we have failed to enforce the rule of law, and Americans all around the country are literally paying billions of dollars for it. The White House requested $1.32 billion of your money to be used for the “care, feeding and transportation costs” of these illegal immigrants in comparison to a meager $32 million for deportation funding.
The primary responsibility of the president is to faithfully execute the laws of the land. Obama has chosen to faithfully execute only the laws of the land that he agrees with while ignoring the ones he disagrees with. This current crisis is a case in point. A true leader in the White House would take care that all the laws be faithfully executed and make clear to all nations that the United States will not tolerate illegal actions.
The only solution to reduce the growing number of unaccompanied alien children entering our country is to secure our border. The duty of any sitting American president is to safeguard the rights and property of his citizens first and foremost, not those of another country.
Obama’s stance on illegal immigration has only caused chaos at the border.
