Reports indicate that the man wanted by police for several random hammer attacks was gunned down by officers in Midtown.
The shooting happened Monday morning on 37th Street and Eighth Avenue in Midtown. Police recognized the man from pictures that had been circulating.
The man reportedly took out a claw hammer and started swinging after he was approached by officers. Shots were fired at the suspect taking him down.
Commissioner Bill Bratton said during a press conference the officers were treated at the hospital sustaining minor injuries.
The suspect was wanted for four random hammer attacks in Manhattan including Union Square and Madison Square Park.
