The Black Institute is partnering with Brooklyn City Council Member Mathieu Eugene for an immigration forum in Brooklyn Thursday, Jan. 26.
As a hub for public policy, the institute continues to have an impact on social justice issues. The forum is being held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Holy Cross RC Church at 2530 Church Ave. near Bedford Avenue and Rogers Avenue.
“We are committed to making sure that immigrants are safe,” said the Institute’s campaign manager, Tiffany Jones. “New York City is a sanctuary city. We want to make the pathway to citizenship easier for them.”
The forum is being moderated by Mona Lisa J. Ferrari, the president of the Haitian Research Society. The panel includes social justice agencies such as the New York Immigration Coalition and the New York Legal Assistant Group, and Macx L. Jean Louis, an attorney from the National Immigration Project.
Immigrants are often the most vulnerable to changing federal policies.
“With this new administration, we want to make it clear that we don’t support profiling, attacking, harassing or sweeping of any immigrants in our city,” Jones said.
New York Assembly Member Rodneyse Bichotte of the 42nd District, State Sen. Jesse Hamilton of the 20th Senate District and Haitian Consul General Peter Helder Bernard will be available for questions.
The institute will support Brooklyn’s immigrant population with education.
The forum will highlight deportation, citizenship, immigration fraud and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s statement on the tools that will be given to local governments to protect immigrant communities.
