The recent election saw voters elect the first Black Township Councilmember in Mount Laurel in Burlington County, Kareem Pritchett, who is now one of the only two Democrats elected to the council.

Pritchett is a state corrections officer, according to reports, and wants to bring transparency to city government along with improvements to the city’s website and social media presence.

“I have always had a desire to serve my community,” he said. “The best way to do that is to be involved in the planning and decision making of our township. I want to see Mount Laurel flourish for its residents and businesses. I am a man of values and principles.”

Along with transparency about the township’s budget, Pritchett also wants to address public safety and work with the police department.

Mount Laurel has a population of just over 41,700 and is just under 10 percent Black.
